Get Online Week 2017

Get Online Week 2017

It’s Get Online Week 2-8 October so Surrey County Council and partners have teamed up to offer you a varied programme of free ‘taster’ events where you can learn the basics of using computers and the internet.

This year’s theme is Try 1 Thing – use the internet to do just one thing you’d normally do in a shop or bank, at a doctor’s surgery or chemist, or even over the phone.

There are so many things you could try online - apply for or renew your Blue Badge; renew library books; order groceries; send an email instead of a letter; speak to family and friends face-to-face on a video call using your tablet or laptop – it’s often cheaper than using the phone.

If you’re an unpaid carer, there’s an online tool available called Jointly. It’s been designed by carers to try and make looking after someone a little easier to manage, and you access it via the internet from a computer or mobile phone (smartphone).

There’s something for everyone. Come to an event near you and find out how the internet can make life easier, cheaper, and more fun. Take a look at what’s on where.

Learn the basics – FREE one-to-one sessions at your library.

Develop your confidence using the computer and learn basic computer skills with help and one-to-one support from your local library’s friendly staff and volunteers. Drop in sessions may also be available on the day, with the option to book longer appointments with one of the 40 digital buddies. Bring your own device if you prefer.

All branches have free WiFi, screen reader software, large screen computers, large keyboards and trackball mice.

There’s free access to computers for library members (and visitor memberships). Please note, charges apply to guest visitors. If you’d like to book a place or find out more, please call 0300 200 1001 (or send a text to 07527 182861), or pop into your local library.
